  • There has been a renewed commitment to improving the country's educational system. There is concern regarding test scores which show that U.S. primary students a performing poorly compared to those in other countries. There is also the recognition that the future labor market will increasingly be composed of jobs requiring academic skills. There was thus bipartisan support for the "No Child Left Behind Act" which significantly increased federal support of public education.

  • Public and private college tuition costs are increasing at a rate far greater than the cost of living. This is placing a significant economic burden on students and their parents.
