Health Care

  • The U.S. health care system constitutes about 15% of the American economy. It is far more expensive than any other country's health care system yet Americans are not healthier nor do they live longer than citizens of many other countries. The U.S. public health care system (Medicare for seniors and Medicaid for poor families and disabled persons) is particularly expensive.

  • A large number of working Americans do not have health care coverage and are virtually priced out of the health care system.

  • The cost of prescription medications, particularly the cost of new drugs, have significantly contributed to the overall high cost of health care.

  • The creation of HMOs helped contain costs during the 1990's but they have generated many complaints from doctors and members.
