North Korea

  • The separation of North and South Korea occurred after World War 2. The Soviet Union occupied North Korea and the U.S. occupied South Korea. The resulting hostilities led to a war from 1950 to 1953. There was no change in boundaries as a result of this conflict and the two countries have remained separate since that time.

  • The North Korean economy has become extremely depressed, especially after the collapse of the Soviet bloc. At the same time, South Korea has prospered. The overall U.S. policy has been to isolate North Korea because of its adherence to a Communist type government.
