The controversy regarding stem cell research exists for the same reasons as does the abortion controversy. Under the current state of science, the most promising research into new medical treatments using stem cells requires the destruction of live human embryos.
The controversy surrounds federal government funding of this research. There is presently no prohibition against privately funded research. It is too early to predict with any certainty whether stem cell research will lead to revolutionary medical treatments or whether there are effective alternatives to using embryonic stem cells.
